If you’re a U2 fan and living in Australia, it’s time to call in a favour with one of those Poms you were trying to give a hard time to in the last Ashes series.
This cover album of Achtung Baby, it comes with the latest edition of Q Magazine (which I’ll at some point get around to reading once I get this CD off my iTunes), is simply incredible. Trouble is, it’s only available with copies sold in the UK!
The genius behind that marketing master stroke is unknown to me, however it’s still very much worth the running around he or she has caused.
Downsides? You are going to have to let The Fray assault your ears. I even swallowed my pride and uploaded their song (they cover Tryin’ To Throw Your Arms Around The World) to my iTunes - the one and only time they will ever be permitted in my music collection.
There’s also no cover of Even Better Than The Real Thing, instead we get a (admittedly very good) remix. Still, would have liked to see someone actually cover it. The Presets spring immediately to mind.
The rest though is gold. Trent Reznor was born to sing Zoo Station. Dave Gahan and Depeche Mode are a perfect fit, lyrically as much as anything else. Damien Rice, who will never be able to count me as his biggest fan, actually covers One (my favourite song on my favourite album) grudgingly well. And Jack White wraps it all up with version of Love Is Blindness that only Jack can manage.
If you’re a U2 and all this gushing this hasn’t convinced you, well, you’re missing out.
Do what you need to do, but just get it.
